Sunglasses are more than just a stylish accessory; they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and are part of your personal style, but how do you know which ones are the best fit? Hannes from Smakrådet is here to help!

1. The right model for your face shape

Sunglasses should both protect you and flatter your features. Consider your face shape when choosing sunglasses. If you’re unsure of your face shape, ask a staff member at an optician’s for advice.

  • Round face: Rectangular and “square” frames create contrast and can make the face appear longer.
  • Square face: Round or oval frames soften the features.
  • Heart-shaped face: Rectangular, oval, and “cat-eye” frames are a good fit for those with a heart-shaped face.
  • Oval face: Congratulations! Almost any style suits you if you have an oval face.

Tip! Try on several different styles and take a selfie. Sometimes that gives you a different feel and perspective than looking in the mirror.

2. Consider your needs

If you spend a lot of time in environments where light reflects off surfaces—such as lakes and the ocean—polarized sunglasses are a smart choice. They filter out glare from the water. Different lenses are suited to different situations, so consider your lifestyle before buying a new pair of sunglasses.

3. Double-check the UV protection

Always make sure your sunglasses offer 100% UV protection (UV400). This protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The CE mark is also important, as it indicates that the sunglasses meet EU safety standards.

4. Choose the right shade

Sunglasses are classified into filter categories 0–4. Always check the label on the inside of the frame or the lens.

  • Category 0–1: Lightly tinted, mainly for style, sports, or overcast weather.
  • Category 2–3: Most common; provides good protection from the sun. This category is ideal for driving.
  • Category 4: Extremely dark; used in mountainous areas, deserts, or on glaciers. Not permitted for driving.

5. Choose the right sunglasses

Different lens colors have different properties that affect both vision and style:

  • Gray: Neutral color rendering, good all-around lens.
  • Brown: Enhances contrast, perfect for sports and nature.
  • Yellow/orange: Highlights details, great in low light. Perfect for sports.
  • Mirrored glass: Stylish and protective, reduces glare.

6. The material matters

  • Plastic frames: Lightweight, often less expensive, and available in many different colors.
  • Metal frames: Stylish and durable, but the frames can get very hot in the sun.
  • TR90 or nylon: Extremely durable and flexible, making them ideal for sports.

7. Consider the fit

A good fit makes a big difference in comfort. The temples should rest lightly against the bridge of your nose without slipping or pinching. Adjustable nose pads are a smart choice if you have a narrow or low bridge of the nose.

8. Take care of your sunglasses

Protect your sunglasses from scratches and dirt by always keeping them in a case. Clean them with a microfiber cloth and mild soap as needed (avoid using paper, clothing, or alcohol, which can scratch the lenses).

Good luck!
